JENNIE HAGEVIK BRINGAKER
My educational background comes from both experimental theater and visual arts. I hold a BFA in production design from The Norwegian Theater School in Fredrikstad, Norway and graduated from New York University with a MFA in Studio Art in 2010.
My work is usually time-based and related to a site-specific space and often manifests itself as live performance or video. I have spent the past 2 years exploring sculpture as a medium that inspires physical encounters between raw materials and the body of the artist. In this investigation I see myself as a kind of an activator that creates new spatial forms, but at the same time I am a captive of my own sculptural constructions. I have explored the use of building materials, such as raw planks and fiberboard, as means to construct formal compositions that I constantly change in front of the audience or the videocamera. There is a sense of a narrative story in my actions and dealings with the materials, and I wish to confuse the terms actor and object as I try to make them inseparable, equally dependent on each other. The relation to theater in my work has a lot to do with proposing a dramatic narrative created in the space between the actor and the object.
Both dramatic text and music has played an important part in several of my performances. The texts might have their origin in ancient Greek drama, television shows such as LOST or in lyrics from an RnB song. When I have been performing songs or readings, the texts serve the purpose of creating a second layer, a pronounced theatrical space within the already established form of the performance. I will often find the starting point for developing a scenic character in a text that might not at first seem related to the sculptural project, but as the performance develops in my preparations for a live event, the physical and visual language of the character will in the end motivate the actions that are going to take place.
Il mio background accademico viene dal teatro sperimentale e dalle arti visive. Ho ottenuto una Laurea in Production Design presso la Scuola Norvegese di Teatro in Fredrikstad in Norvegia, ed una Laurea Specialistica presso l’ Università di New York nel 2010.
Il mio lavoro è generalmente basato sulla relazione tempo-spazio specifico del sito, e spesso si manifesta come una performance dal vivo, o video. Ho trascorso gli ultimi due anni esplorando la scultura come punto di incontro fisico tra materiale allo stato di natura e il corpo dell’ artista. In questa ricerca vedo me stessa come una sorta di catalizzatore che crea nuove forme nello spazio, ma allo stesso tempo, prigioniera delle mie stesse creazioni scultoree. Ho sperimentato l’utilizzo di materiali da costruzione, come tavole grezze di legno e truciolato, con lo scopo di creare composizioni di forme che possano costantemente essere da me modificate di fronte al pubblico, o videocamera. Nelle mie performance e nei modi di trattare i materiali c’è come il senso di un racconto narrato, nel quale il mio desiderio è che i termini agente ed oggetto si fondino, provando a renderli inseparabili, egualmente dipendenti l’ uno dall’ altro. La relazione con il teatro nei miei lavori consiste nel fatto di proporre una narrativa drammatica che viene a crearsi in quello spazio che si crea tra agente ed oggetto.
Sia i testi drammatici sia la musica hanno avuto un ruolo importante in molte delle mie performance. I testi possono essere tratti da vecchi drammi greci, da show televisivi, come ad esempio LOST, o venire da una canzone R’n’B. Durante le performance, canzoni, letture, i testi, hanno il compito di creare un sostrato, un pronunciato spazio teatrale, entro la già stabilita forma, struttura della performance.
Lo spunto per lo sviluppo di un soggetto scenico in un testo può spesso non sembrare legato al progetto scultoreo, ma man mano che la performance prende forma, in preparazione di un evento live, il linguaggio fisico e visivo del soggetto si trasformeranno in azione.
