Rhea Leman

Growing up in New York City, Rhea Leman spent most of her time in dance studios and sneaking into theaters after the intermission. Both of these paid off when she started her own theater/dance company at the age of seventeen. In 1980, she met the Danish filmmaker/writer, Hans Kragh-Jacobsen and after three weeks they got married. Since then she has been living and working in Copenhagen directing her own theater company and freelancing at many of the theaters in Denmark, including The Royal Theater. In 1995 she started to write and direct for Denmark’s television station DR1 and in 2003, she was appointed by the Cultural Minister of Denmark for a four-year term as chairman of the Danish Theater Council and a member of Denmark’s Art Council. In 2008, Leman was artist-in-resident at Shanghai Theater Academy and since then has written, directed and produced several of her plays including GORILLA in which she was nominated for best playwright in 2013 as part of the renowned Danish Reumert awards.  Recently she was awarded The Allen prize by the Danish Play/Screenwriters union for “Excellent dramatic writing”. Rhea is in Italy to finish the writing of her next production: BERLUSCONI, THE MUSICAL.
