Visual artist | Iceland
Guðný Kristmannsdóttir (born 1965) completed preliminary art studies at the Comprehensive College in Breiðholt in 1988 and went from there to study at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts in 1988-1991, where she graduated from the department of painting. Soon after she moved to Akureyri and has been living and working there ever since. Guðný has held both solo exhibitions and participated in various group exhibitions Iceland and abroad. She was Akureyri City-artist, 2009-2010.
Guðný has mainly worked in large-scale oil paintings on canvas and wood, while drawings and mixed media also play an important role in her art. The main focus in her art is to look at the delicate creative process and the pleasure in creation. She is a firm believer in the value of the spontaneous and accidental as well as the formal/rhythmical vagaries arising from the unexpected. Experimentation and dreams are an important part of her working process, she transfers the imagery straight to the canvas, without any preliminary drawings.
