Visual artist | Norway
Tone Myskja (f.1961) is a Norwegian artist, working with video as a visual and sculptural element in relation to exhibitions, concerts and stage performances. She has studied theatre design, sculpture and video/media at art academies respectively in Oslo, Antwerpen and London. She has a sculptural and musical approach to working with art/video, and compose complex and compond videos and installations. Her work exists between different artistic disciplines, drawing from her interest in music, dance, theatre, literature, painting and sculpture.
Thematically, much of her work relates to the complexity of language, identity and perception, and how these aspect are influenced by time, space, materiality and body movement.
Her first solo exhibition was in Antwerp in 1993, after which she has participated in a series of exhibitions and stage related work both in Norway and internationally.
She has had a solo exhibition at Trafo Kunsthall, Asker in 2014, Kunstbanken Hedmark, Hamar in 2015, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo in 2008 and Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo in 2006.
Tone Myskja has collaborated with several of Norway's best jazz musicians and classical ensembles including video to Oslo Camerata's performance of Steve Reich's "Different Trains" during the Ultima Festival 2016, "LautLeben" commissioning work by Rolf Wallin / Sidsel Endresen during Ultima 2006 and Sidsel Endresen's work for Night jazz during Bergen International Festival 2002.
Myskja has designed costumes and video scenography for Querini Opera Røst, premiere in 2012 and also performed in 2014 and 2018. She was commisioned video-scenography work for "I want to hear the sea" National Theater Oslo 2017 and in 2002 she also participated in the Venice Biennale Danza with video for a dance performance by the Italian choreographer Francesco Scavetta.
Her work has also been shown at NRK in connection with the cultural program Safari and artist portraits, 3 artists - 3 landscapes. Her work has been collected by the Nordic Watercolor Museum, the Norwegian Cultural Council and the National Library.
Myskja has also had a number of major public art commisions in Norway, Norwegian Resistance Museum, Akershus Fortress 2009, Department of Informatics, UIO 2011 and Thora Storm High School in Trondheim in 2017.
She is now shortlisted for a public art competition Skarnes new primary school, October-November 2018
Tone Myskja has received scholarship from institutions in Belgium, England and Norway, and is now a recipient of the Government Guarantee Income for artists.
Current work is a group exhibition Galleri Semmingsen, Oslo, June 2018 and a solo show at Oppland Art Center in October 2018.
Tone Myskja and her husband, composer/musician, Jon Balke have since 2006 developed MADSTUN project site at Fall in Søndre Land Municipality as part of their artistic practice.
