VIBEKE VASBO

Vibeke Vasbo is a Danish novelist, poet, essayist and activist. She has been a full-time writer since

1982.

Vibeke was born on the island of Als, off the east coast of South Jutland, Denmark. As a young

woman, she spent six months in Cambridge, England – language studies and au pair – and then

studied German at the University of Copenhagen…until the student protest movement claimed

all her attention, and she became active in establishing the modern Women’s Movement in Denmark – and has been active on the feminist front ever since.

After a varied early career – school teacher, crane driver in Oslo, medical secretary, nursing

auxiliary, organist – she spent four years living in Hull, England, while married to the Danish seamen’s chaplain there. It was in Hull that she researched her historical novel Hildas sang (The Song of Hild). Back in Denmark, Vibeke has been active in the Danish Writers’ Association, and in saving provincial libraries from closure. She has made numerous appearances on television and radio, and in the print media.

Vibeke Vasbo is now re-married and lives in a cottage near the sea, where she writes in an old

building-site wooden shed in the garden. She is currently writing a major book about the women´s

movement – and that is what she is working on in Rome.
