Painter and essayist | Sweden
John Sundkvist is a Swedish painter and essayist.
His most recent exhibition took place at Galleri Gunnar Olsson in Stockholm in 2018. Previous exhibitions include: Aguélimuseet, 2018; Gustavsbergs porslinsmuseum, 2016; Olle Nymans ateljéer och konstnärshem, 2013; Östasiatiska Museet and National Art Museum of China, 2008–09. From the beginning of the 1980s, he has held or participated in numerous exhibitions in galleries and other venues in Sweden, France, China and Australia. In 2006 a major retrospective was organized at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm. His work is represented in Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Göteborgs Konstmuseum and Musée Picasso in Antibes among others.
In 2003 he published Mellan närvaro och sken, a collection of essays on art and art theory, most of them previously published in Svenska Dagbladet. Latest title: A gap in the weave, published in connection with the exhibition at Gustavsbergs porslinsmuseum of recent paintings and pieces from his collection of ancient East Asian ceramics. He currently writes for the online art magazine konsten.net and various journals and reviews.
He has also translated and introduced a volume of essays by the French poet Yves Bonnefoy, Den andra jorden, and the correspondence between Witold Gombrowicz and Jean Dubuffet, Brevväxling.
